Exposure: Full sun to part shade. Zone 3 to 9.
Soil: Prefers sandy loam soils, but will grow in any well-aerated acidic to circumneutral garden soil.
Growth habits: A twining, climbing leguminous perennial vine with dark green compound leaves and brownish lavender flowers in early summer.
Landscape uses: Plant along fence lines or let climb up stakes at the end of a well tilthed garden bed.
Edible/Medicinal properties: Groundnut was a staple food for eastern Native American peoples. It produces a string of edible high protein tubers that are delicious either raw or cooked.
