Chinese Dogwood (Cornus kousa)
| |
|
Exposure: Full sun to light shade. Zone 5-8
Soil: Prefers an acidic, well-drained soil with
good organic matter content.
Growth habits: A handsome small tree to 25 feet
high and wide over time, with horizontal branch patterning and exfoliating
bark. The beautiful, large, creamy white flowers emerge in early
June and contrast nicely with the emergent dark green foliage. Chinese
dogwood is a good, disease-resistant substitute for our native flowering
dogwood. The edible 1½ inch red fruit ripens in the fall
and adds late season interest to this wonderful small tree.
Landscape uses: Cornus kousa makes a handsome small
specimen tree with multi-season landscape interest. Works well in
a shrub border or in a foundation planting at the corner of a house,
where its horizontal branching breaks up vertical architectural
lines. It is excellent near large buildings or blank walls.
Edible properties: The Chinese dogwood’s
fruit is good for fresh eating and can be easily fermented into
specialty wines and meads.
$36.00 / 5 gal. |
