Soil: Average well-drained soil. Circumneutral pH(6.5) is best but will tolerate more acidic soil.
Growth habits: A large, long-lived tree of conical shape averaging 30 to 40 feet tall and wide, but can grow taller. White flowers in April are followed by sweet, dark red 1 inch heart-shaped fruit in July. Dark green leaves in summer with yellow to bronze fall foliage.
Landscape uses: Prunus avium, the parent of all our sweet cherry cultivars, is difficult to find in the nursery trade, but can often be found growing in old homesteads around the mountains. It makes a beautiful, durable, medium to large tree that is valuable as a specimen or shade tree or can be used in the home orchard. Whatever you don’t harvest, the wildlife will be happy to consume.
Edible properties: The delicious 1 inch cherries are loaded with beneficial phytonutrients and contain the concentrated essence of cherry flavor.
