Small Leaved Pea Shrub (Caragana microphylla)
| |
|
Exposure: Full sun. Zone 2.
Soil: Prefers a well-limed garden soil, though
it seems to be widely adaptable. Similar to Siberian
pea shrub.
Growth habits: An erect oval shrub or small tree
to 15’ in height. Its yellow pea flowers in May followed by
small peas in mid summer. Nitrogen fixing. Similar to Siberian
pea shrub, but with a much smaller leaf size and a more wispy
form.
Landscape uses: Use as a nitrogen fixing companion
plant in edible hedges, orchards, and forest gardens. Makes a good
chickenyard plant as it provides shade, predator protection and
chicken feed. Similar to Siberian
pea shrub, but with a much finer texture.
Edible/Medicinal properties: Excellent protein
source for poultry. Fresh peas are bland in taste and are best served
in chilis or other spiced dishes.
