Soil: Acidic, moist, well-drained soil of high organic content, similar to blueberries.
Growth habits: Relatively slow and low-spreading, stoloniferous small shrubs from 12-18 inches tall and wide. Lingonberry is a widely adapted small evergreen shrub with dainty ½ inch leaves that turn a rich burgundy in winter. Medium-sized, bright red fruit in the fall follows small white spring flowers, reminiscent of cranberries
Landscape uses: Native evergreen small shrub is well-suited to row cultivation or use as pathway edging, at the front of a shrub border, or as an evergreen addition to perennial beds. Does not compete well with grasses or tall weeds.
Edible/Medicinal properties: Berries make excellent perserves and jellies - the plant is nicknamed the "cranberry of the mountains." Leaves can also be used as a substitute for tea leaves.
