Crampbark (Viburnum opulus), European Cranberrybush

 

 

 

Exposure: Full sun, will tolerate part shade but with reduced fruit production. Zone 4.
Soil: Tolerant of a wide range of soils, including wet, boggy soils.
Growth habits: Viburnum opulus is a medium to 10 to 15 foot multiple stemmed viburnum with attractive, almost maple like, foliage, attractive clusters of white flowers in the spring, and red, quite tart fruit that ripens in the fall and then shrivels on the plant and holds into the winter.
Landscape uses: Shrub border, screen, massing, wildlife plant.
Usefulness: Crampbark is used for either muscle or menstrual cramping, the fruit is quite tart and generally not suitable for fresh eating, however, it can be processed into preserves or pemmicans.
