Nettle, Stinging (Urtica dioica)

   

Plant Characteristics: Herbaceous, dioecious perennial, sun or shade, moist fertile soil, need nitrogen. Grows up to 4 feet, spreading.
Harvest: Aerial parts of young plants, wear gloves, 3-4  harvests per year.
Primary Benefits: Steam as fresh vegetable for spring tonic, rich in iron, dry leaves for teas and infusions. Fresh root is good tonic for prostate. Excellent source of micronutrients and minerals, rich in chlorophyll, vitamins A and C. Helps allergies, arthritis, eczema, anemia. Encourages flow of milk in nursing mothers. Blood invigorating properties of nettles help girls at puberty and women with menopause symptoms.
