Marshmellow (Althaea officinalis)

   

Plant Characteristics: Herbaceous perennial. Mallows have long stems to 4 feet with large white flowers and delicate round leaves, spreads to 3 feet. Full sun to part shade, likes deep fertile soil, tolerant of poorly drained soils.
Harvest: Roots in fall of second year. Add flowers to a salad.
Primary Benefits: Mucilaginous, chewed leaves make a soothing oral poultice. Root medicines sooth irritated internal tissues such as throat, prostate or urinary tract. Reduces inflammation of skin, eyes, and lungs.
