Dwarf Siberian Pea Shrub (Caragana arborescens)
Exposure: Full sun to part shade. Zone 2-7.
Soil: Prefers a well-limed garden soil, though it seems to be widely adaptable.
Growth habits: An erect oval shrub or small tree to 15 feet in height. Its yellow pea flowers in May are followed by small peas in mid summer. Nitrogen fixing.
Landscape uses: Use as a nitrogen fixing companion plant in edible hedges, orchards, and forest gardens. Makes a good chickenyard plant as it provides shade, predator protection and chicken feed.
Edible/Medicinal Properties: Excellent protein source for poultry. Fresh peas are bland in taste and are best served in chilis or other spiced dishes.
