High Bush Cranberry, Viburnum trilobum, American Cranberrybush

Exposure: Full sun to partial shade. Zone 2.

Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil.

Growth habits: Similar to crampbark (Viburnum opulus), grows 8-12’ tall and wide. Beautiful white flowers in early June, red to purple fall color. Plants start producing red fruit at about 5 years of age.

Landscape uses: Shrub borders, as a small flowering tree, background or border plant, attracts birds and wildlife.

Usefulness:Berries have a similar flavor to cranberries (Debbie is skeptical about this) and ripen at the same time of year. The fruits are sour and rich in vitamin C, and can be eaten raw or cooked into a sauce. The French Canadian name for the berries is Pembina.
